the random post with meme

1. If you like My Chemical Romance, I really advice to skip to the next point. I don't care about them and I don't like them either, but what's under the cut wasn't definitely good. This is not nice.

Okay. So, My Chemical Romance covered Bob Dylan's Desolation Row. And I was linked the video and I watched it. And? Well, my dear MCR,

- Desolation Row lasts ten minutes. Not three.

- The fact that you cover it as a punk song doesn't mean it has to last three minutes. That's called butchering.

- The bare fact that you cover it in punk style makes me want to throw up.

- Bob Dylan is WAY out-of-your-league. Also, you don't cover a song which has inspiration by Steinbeck, Eliot and Kerouac in three minutes butchering half of the lyrics and cutting I don't know how much.

- Yes, I am a snob purist when I want to. Good covers that change the original respecting it are absolutely fine with me. Butchering like THIS? No, thank you.

Also, I'm not not okay with it just because it was My Chemical Romance while I'd have been okay with it if it was someone I liked to begin with. I'd have been not okay with it even if it was someone I liked, even if I doubt that someone I liked would have butchered it that way. /end rant

I love good cover songs, LOVE THEM, sometimes they make a song better, sometimes they totally fuck it up, so I totally feel your pain there.

And Bruce is coming here in APRIL!!!

Also, I have "My Lucky Day" on repeat, I just love that song, LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, if you listen to the I'm Not There soundtrack it's ALL Bob Dylan covers and ALL good covers so just... why? Why? What's the point? I just... blah. I don't care really about the intentions, they just should leave Dylan alone. Thanks.

AAAAH GOOD FOR YOU!!! HERE JULY BUT OMG CAN'T WAIT. And ha, My lucky Day is great!! I'm on with Queen of the Supermarket but I need to fic it. ;)

I FAIL AT LIFE!

I am like downloading Dylan albums every now and again, somewhat random even. And for some reaons I do NOT have Highway 61 Revisited... I haven't even listened to it "for real".
I mean, I'm sure dad has played it many many times for me as I grew up but that doesn't really count now does it?

Dear MCR... your choice of song to cover only brings one thing: I will listen to a great Dylan album and NEVER EVER your song. EVER!

yes... it's downloading right now. I shall fix my fail.

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, don't worry, you don't. And hey, you're fixing it! And hey, THEY fail at life, not you. ;) MCR, I mean.

And yeah, that one. That one. God. That was some goddamnawful cover. Blaaaaargh. *sigh*

[identity profile] pnr.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
*laugh*

I refuse to listen to it!

btw, do you know of Samy bought a whole pile of tickets or what?

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Samy bought three, two for me and her and then the third is supposed to be yours if everything goes according to plan but I hope it does. ;) And ha, don't listen to it. Better. Really. Better. My ears still bleed. I've been listening to Mozart since in order to forget it.

[identity profile] pnr.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY!
Can I do anything to ease the convincing of those parents of yours?

*listens to good music instead*

[identity profile] fosfomifira.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Covers are kind of hit and miss. I'm not really familiar with either the original nor the new version, so that's pretty much all I have to say on the subject.

So glad to hear you got the card and that you liked it. As for Mariana!Sawyer, I was thinking that maybe in a possible Sandokan AU, Sawyer would be a conman trying to seduce Shannon!Mariana to get to her uncle's money, and that Sayid!Sandokan would come to her rescue, except that he'd fall for the other blond in the room (namely, Sawyer). And Desmond would make an excellent YaƱez, don't you agree?

Good luck with your exam :)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you need to write that. Yanez!Desmond would make me flail like no other thing but oh God. Seriously, that's SO awesome. Uhm, Jack is Tremal Naik? ;) ;)

Covers are indeed hit and miss too, but that one is just the worst possible choice to do as a punk song. *sigh*

Thanks! I'll need it but if I pass that one I'm practically half done for the term.

[identity profile] marylou-gr.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Punk cover of Desolation Row? Punk? Really? What the hell were they thinking? I'm usually a sucker for covers of my favorite songs, but this one was terrible.

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That exactly. I mean, of ALL the Dylan songs one could do you choose one which is ten minutes long? *headdesk* Blah. I'm not ever listening to it again for sure.

[identity profile] elliotsmelliot.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
There are more bad covers out there than good ones. I feel your pain. Of course those who listen to Keith Urban and Brad Paisley, well, I don't know if they have a right to judge anyone...just kidding!

I'm like you when it comes to literary genres. I'll read pretty much anything. It's quality that is important.

I thought you liked GNR. Was it Chinese Democracy that landed Axl Rose on your bad list?

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, no no you're right, my top country charts stuff makes me want to headdesk for how cheesy it gets but it's addictive. I said guilty pleasure, not that it was good! ;) But that other cover is especially horrible. *throws up*

Quality indeed. I don't really have a favorite genre, but if it's bad written I won't read it.

Well, I love GNR as a whole group but I never could stand him individually. I got into GNR because I liked the bassist and Slash mainly and then I like Axl as part of the first three records and I think he was a terrific songwriter (now I'd have my doubts), but after 1993 he just did so much crap that I really can't like the guy. And Chinese Democracy just confirmed him on my bad list.

What is the world coming down to if, we, non-natives, are correcting their English? ;);)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, what?? And I mean, a cannon.... How can you confuse canon with CANNON? I mean, it doesn't... aaaah well. *sigh* Not reading anything which says it indeed. ;)

[identity profile] sizzleleg.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHA it's like when Fall Out Boy covered 'Love Will tear Us Apart' by Joy division. DO NOT WANT.

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? :... :-( I collect Joy Division covers (like, Girls Against Boys' doing "She's Lost Control") but that's one I can happily skip!

[identity profile] sizzleleg.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's fucking terrible. I was talking to someone who only heard the FOB version and thought that was the original. I took pity on them.

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh dear god! I hope they were very young, at least!

[identity profile] sizzleleg.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
they were in their mid 20s. No excuse!

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God, they did THAT? ......... well, do not want indeed. *sigh*

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm definitely no fan of MCR either. But (shocking as it may seem), I'm not a huge fan of Dylan's either. I mean, I admire the hell out of the guy but, what can I say, I prefer Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" to the original. (And how do you feel about that particular cover?) I can't help it, I just prefer to ROCK, if given the option.

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Re All Along The Watchtower', I totally love Hendrix's cover, even if I kind of have a thing for Eddie Vedder's version which was on the I'm Not There soundtrack, too. I love Dylan but I'm absolutely not of the idea that he's untouchable or anything, I love a lot of Dylan covers and I totally prefer rock given the option. But that MCR one is completely without any sense and the bare idea that someone could think that it's an original song of theirs is enough to make me want to cry. ;)

[identity profile] halfdutch.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There's an Eddie Vedder version? Ooh, I'd love to hear that!

Not every cover works, even if you like both artists, like The Cure covering Jimi's "Foxey Lady" is just kind of ... eh. But it's always interesting to see who people admire. I tend to be very picky with who covers my favorite artists and I've definitely warmed up to a few who've done a cover version I like.

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-01-31 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, he did it for the soundrack for that movie, which is actually a ton of awesome Dylan covers. There were a couple which were some gems but anyway, here it is (http://www.sendspace.com/file/tzhtse). Enjoy!

Yep, not every cover works indeed. I never heard that Cure one but I can just imagine it wouldn't exactly work. For me it happened with Roger Taylor covering Springsteen because I love them both but seriously, his Racing In The Street cover is kind of completely without any purpose whatsoever. I think I end up liking covers where you can hear that whoever covers it really loves the original. IE; I rank Redemption Song made in Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer with the original one. But I can be very picky, too.

[identity profile] etpmvemp.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Is the new Bruce that good? I haven't listened to it yet, now seems like a good time.

I have an exam on Wednesday too, my deepest condolences... and it is only the first one.... Why can't they let us be? (Ok, now I am whining too)

[identity profile] janie-tangerine.livejournal.com 2009-02-01 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, it's really good. Well, it's not Born To Run or Nebraska but I kinda love it.

Ouch, condolences from me, too. *sigh* Yeah, first one for me, too. And then I have another two... *headdesk* good luck to you though, we can do it!
