some thoughts on firefly + meme + stuff

1. Hiii! I'm back, luckily the train wasn't too late, I seriously need to decide if I'm going on vacation next week or not (yeah, yeah, this is called thinking things early *snorts*), I'm all caught up and I has some blathering about my Firefly watching, from ep 1 to 5. Mostly general stuff I guess, but hey. I have a new show! And it's only 14 eps so I will catch up with it in a week maximum!
a. Okay, so this has to be the only show I've ever seen where I didn't have a favorite character clear from the first two episodes. Though in this case it's a good thing because I'm mostly loving everyone. Actually, I love the entire premise, it's so intriguing! Why the hell didn't I ever watch it before? Right, because here it never aired anywhere if not maybe on cable, but whatever. Until now I'm really, really loving everything. I love the writing, I love the setting, I like that it's a total genres-pastiche and that it works and IT HAS WELL WRITTEN WOMEN!
b. The only character I still haven't warmed up to is probably Jayne. Half of the time I enjoy the character and the other half I want to smack him, especially when he's being mean to poor Simon. But, I need to admit that his hat is fantastic (
haldoor, I absolutely agree about that, lol).
c. Actually, I probably want to smack him when he's mean to Simon because Simon is exactly the character I usually fall for (you know, young nice guy, kind of pretty, with a sibling, his load of issues, self-sacrificing) and I actually do love him, but I thiiiink I'm getting my crush on Mal. Who is usually the kind of character (you know, the lead one, with the sorta dark past, wears incredibly cool clothes and has the though attitude and has cool lines regarding priests being welcome on his ships and God being not) which comes second in my chart, but I think this round things have switched. Or at least, I'm leaning there.
d. I freaking love Zoe. What a great character, she's just so awesome. Actually I was so glad to see that for once the first mate was a woman!! And an intelligent one, for that matter. And one who is in a sane, healthy relationship and doesn't get into love triangles of sorts.
d2. Hi, my canon-ships loving self. I ship Zoe/Wash like woah, and I mean, I'm shipping a canon het couple. For the what, third time in my whole life? *is shocked* And btw, Wash is awesome. Even if I guess that he's the character out of the bunch that got picked to wear the awful shirts (which seemingly happens in every show I watch, but awesome nonetheless).
e. Kaylee is just so adorable. I want her for my bff or something, also because while a lot of people know I like pink, a few know that I absolutely love frilly pink dresses like the one she wanted in 1x04. That scene at the ball was so awesome. And I loved when the guy basically sent to fuck off that idiot who took pity on the dress and then she ended up talking with the guy and his friends about engines, lol. (Also, Mal going with her and dressed that way and actually fencing? *snickers*)
f. I really like Inara too. I'm not too fond of the Inara/Mal UST though, but I like their relationship and I like her in general.
g. I also like River a lot, even if girls speaking I definitely prefer Zoe. But I love her relationship with Simon, their story is intriguing and hers especially is. Also, everyone's acting is great, seriously. Why the hell on TV here the only Joss Whedon shows that are perpetually aired until one gets sick are Buffy and Angel? I'd have really loved to catch this one on tv even if I guess they wouldn't bother to air fourteen episodes if not on cable. Blah. Pity. Also, Shepherd Book = awesome.
h. Okay, I think I'm done with the rambling. I'm not trying to decide my favorite episode until now, I'll just watch it all first. And I'll probably go watching another couple before going to bed, even if I should be writing. But I'm not in the right frame of mind.
2. Very cool meme stolen from
falafel_musings!
1. Write a list of 15 of your fandoms; including films, TV series, books and stage shows.
2. Ask people on your flist to pick a fandom and guess who your favourite character is from it.
3. If they guess right, you must explain why this character is or became your favourite.
4. If you share this fandom with the poster guess who their favourite is too.
I'm not including Heroes because a) it's seriously too obvious and b) I still am not caught up and I think I completely lost interest *sigh*. And I'm not including operas even if considering my standards of fangirling in regards of opera I probably should *cough*.
1. The Dark Tower series
2. Lost
3. Supernatural (hint: this has at least three correct answers since I switched three favorite characters for, er, canon reasons, and a fourth for the one who has always been the second and for S3 and half S4 did stay first)
4. Friday Night Lights
5. Six Feet Under
6. The Wire
7. Lord of the Rings
8. Maurice
9. The Three Musketeers (YEAH, it's a fandom. I wrote for it, dammit. ;) )
10. Good Omens
11. Pushing Daisies
12. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
13. Watchmen
14. Star Wars (first trilogy)
15. Rent (okay, I only became obsessed with it recently and I'm not at fandom levels, but I had a blank spot and if I put Blade Runner it'd have been the feast of obvious. ;) )
3. Completely not-fandom related, but how do you know you're in Italy? When you take a train which has high velocity and is supposedly the best thing Italian railways can offer you right now (and believe me, they don't have much) and the air conditioning is broken on the day when there's 38 degrees outside. And just in the part where we got seats but whatever, I got a free seat in first class where they guy next to me was totally reading what I was writing/editing on the laptop (aka Dean/Castiel fic *cough*) so at least there was that.
4. #3 related, it's freaking hot. Right, it's Italy and it's August but still. *fans*
5. I don't want to count how much I've listened to the Rent soundtrack in the past week. Hell, I'm fighting the urge to quote it in fic, which is so not what I need.
6. And since I don't have anything more interesting to say for today and tomorrow I'll need to be up sometime soon because
marlonob is spending the afternoon here and I'll pick her up at lunch hour and I want to do something useful in the morning I will be in my bunk watching some more Firefly. And tomorrow morning I actually hope to do some luau catching up. *waves*

Date: 2009-08-04 06:51 pm (UTC)For the meme:
Lost = Boone
SPN = John, Dean and... Cas?
FNL = Jason. Or Tim. *debates*
SFU = ...David?
Watchmen = Rorschach? Shit, I can't remember.
LOL, except for Lost and 2/3 of SPN, I think I failed at those guesses. =P

Date: 2009-08-04 06:56 pm (UTC)I think I decided that my favorite is Mal but I might change idea, they're all so great. Kaylee is just adorable! And I love Simon too, he should be my favorite seeing my patterns but for once I'm going with the dark main character :P
I think I did warm up to Jayne in the end. He is the kind of lovable jerk indeed, lol. And yeah, I'm watching the movie when I'm done with the series, which will probably be before the end of the week.

Date: 2009-08-04 10:59 pm (UTC)Kaylee is definitely the cutest. My favourite thing about Joss Whedon is that, like you said, he does create very well-written, well-rounded female characters. I love that Kaylee is the ship's mechanic, but she's not a hard-ass, she's still stereotypically girly, wanting that frilly dress. And that River seems like a poor damsel in distress until you realize she's brilliant and can also kick EVERYONE'S ass without blinking. ♥ Simon is so pretty and sweet as well, but I do find Mal edging him out as a favourite a lot for me too. Mal has that great sense of humor along with his angsty past, and I like his sense of fairness. He's a great captain because he's everyone's friend but he also has their respect. I'd gladly follow Capt. Tightpants anywhere.
You watched Firefly in the same order me -- I watched the series first and then the movie at the end. My friend watched the movie first and the series afterwards, which she said helped her understand everything a little better. I don't know which would've worked better, cause the movie does a pretty good job of not feeling out of place with the series but also not needing prior knowledge of the series. I think it's pretty stellar.
