some thoughts on firefly + meme + stuff

1. Hiii! I'm back, luckily the train wasn't too late, I seriously need to decide if I'm going on vacation next week or not (yeah, yeah, this is called thinking things early *snorts*), I'm all caught up and I has some blathering about my Firefly watching, from ep 1 to 5. Mostly general stuff I guess, but hey. I have a new show! And it's only 14 eps so I will catch up with it in a week maximum!
a. Okay, so this has to be the only show I've ever seen where I didn't have a favorite character clear from the first two episodes. Though in this case it's a good thing because I'm mostly loving everyone. Actually, I love the entire premise, it's so intriguing! Why the hell didn't I ever watch it before? Right, because here it never aired anywhere if not maybe on cable, but whatever. Until now I'm really, really loving everything. I love the writing, I love the setting, I like that it's a total genres-pastiche and that it works and IT HAS WELL WRITTEN WOMEN!
b. The only character I still haven't warmed up to is probably Jayne. Half of the time I enjoy the character and the other half I want to smack him, especially when he's being mean to poor Simon. But, I need to admit that his hat is fantastic (
haldoor, I absolutely agree about that, lol).
c. Actually, I probably want to smack him when he's mean to Simon because Simon is exactly the character I usually fall for (you know, young nice guy, kind of pretty, with a sibling, his load of issues, self-sacrificing) and I actually do love him, but I thiiiink I'm getting my crush on Mal. Who is usually the kind of character (you know, the lead one, with the sorta dark past, wears incredibly cool clothes and has the though attitude and has cool lines regarding priests being welcome on his ships and God being not) which comes second in my chart, but I think this round things have switched. Or at least, I'm leaning there.
d. I freaking love Zoe. What a great character, she's just so awesome. Actually I was so glad to see that for once the first mate was a woman!! And an intelligent one, for that matter. And one who is in a sane, healthy relationship and doesn't get into love triangles of sorts.
d2. Hi, my canon-ships loving self. I ship Zoe/Wash like woah, and I mean, I'm shipping a canon het couple. For the what, third time in my whole life? *is shocked* And btw, Wash is awesome. Even if I guess that he's the character out of the bunch that got picked to wear the awful shirts (which seemingly happens in every show I watch, but awesome nonetheless).
e. Kaylee is just so adorable. I want her for my bff or something, also because while a lot of people know I like pink, a few know that I absolutely love frilly pink dresses like the one she wanted in 1x04. That scene at the ball was so awesome. And I loved when the guy basically sent to fuck off that idiot who took pity on the dress and then she ended up talking with the guy and his friends about engines, lol. (Also, Mal going with her and dressed that way and actually fencing? *snickers*)
f. I really like Inara too. I'm not too fond of the Inara/Mal UST though, but I like their relationship and I like her in general.
g. I also like River a lot, even if girls speaking I definitely prefer Zoe. But I love her relationship with Simon, their story is intriguing and hers especially is. Also, everyone's acting is great, seriously. Why the hell on TV here the only Joss Whedon shows that are perpetually aired until one gets sick are Buffy and Angel? I'd have really loved to catch this one on tv even if I guess they wouldn't bother to air fourteen episodes if not on cable. Blah. Pity. Also, Shepherd Book = awesome.
h. Okay, I think I'm done with the rambling. I'm not trying to decide my favorite episode until now, I'll just watch it all first. And I'll probably go watching another couple before going to bed, even if I should be writing. But I'm not in the right frame of mind.
2. Very cool meme stolen from
falafel_musings!
1. Write a list of 15 of your fandoms; including films, TV series, books and stage shows.
2. Ask people on your flist to pick a fandom and guess who your favourite character is from it.
3. If they guess right, you must explain why this character is or became your favourite.
4. If you share this fandom with the poster guess who their favourite is too.
I'm not including Heroes because a) it's seriously too obvious and b) I still am not caught up and I think I completely lost interest *sigh*. And I'm not including operas even if considering my standards of fangirling in regards of opera I probably should *cough*.
1. The Dark Tower series
2. Lost
3. Supernatural (hint: this has at least three correct answers since I switched three favorite characters for, er, canon reasons, and a fourth for the one who has always been the second and for S3 and half S4 did stay first)
4. Friday Night Lights
5. Six Feet Under
6. The Wire
7. Lord of the Rings
8. Maurice
9. The Three Musketeers (YEAH, it's a fandom. I wrote for it, dammit. ;) )
10. Good Omens
11. Pushing Daisies
12. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
13. Watchmen
14. Star Wars (first trilogy)
15. Rent (okay, I only became obsessed with it recently and I'm not at fandom levels, but I had a blank spot and if I put Blade Runner it'd have been the feast of obvious. ;) )
3. Completely not-fandom related, but how do you know you're in Italy? When you take a train which has high velocity and is supposedly the best thing Italian railways can offer you right now (and believe me, they don't have much) and the air conditioning is broken on the day when there's 38 degrees outside. And just in the part where we got seats but whatever, I got a free seat in first class where they guy next to me was totally reading what I was writing/editing on the laptop (aka Dean/Castiel fic *cough*) so at least there was that.
4. #3 related, it's freaking hot. Right, it's Italy and it's August but still. *fans*
5. I don't want to count how much I've listened to the Rent soundtrack in the past week. Hell, I'm fighting the urge to quote it in fic, which is so not what I need.
6. And since I don't have anything more interesting to say for today and tomorrow I'll need to be up sometime soon because
marlonob is spending the afternoon here and I'll pick her up at lunch hour and I want to do something useful in the morning I will be in my bunk watching some more Firefly. And tomorrow morning I actually hope to do some luau catching up. *waves*

Date: 2009-08-02 10:01 pm (UTC)So, Spn: I was going to say Dean, Sam and Castiel, but... Dean, John, Cas + Sam?
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 07:52 am (UTC)Dean is the one who stayed my steady second favorite for S1, 2 and half of 4 and was my favorite for 3 and the first half of 4. Cas is my current favorite. John was my fav. in S1. And for how much I do love Sam, the other one is Ash. I had a crush on the guy of serious and scary proportions *cough* so it was John, Ash, Cas + Dean. John mostly because I really started getting into SPN around the time they found him (first I liked it but I wasn't really invested), Ash was kind of love at first sight and Cas stole my heart after 4x16. But Dean is my steady SPN crush, lol.

Date: 2009-08-03 10:49 am (UTC)Are the summers always that hot in Italy? Last I was there it was probably forty degrees.
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 10:55 am (UTC)And... heee. Yes. They are. Here in Rome not so badly actually at least this year, but there were a couple of weeks when you could barely breathe and in the south it's like, 36 degrees minimum.

Date: 2009-08-02 10:15 pm (UTC)6, Omar (Or McNulty? I'll stick with Omar)
7, Faramir
12, Columbia (don't know why I'm guessing that! Just a hunch. If not her then either Frank or Eddie - cos you always like Eddies!)

Date: 2009-08-02 10:24 pm (UTC)Jayne is well... he's so charming. But yeah he's an ass a lot of the times. I think when you've finished you will be so loving him anyway.
and about favourite ep... haha, there was one ep (I'm not telling you which cause it might make you all "oooh this is it!" and be dissapointed you know?) that had me thinking "holy fucking shit, this is awesome! This is my favourite episode, hands down, and they won't be able to top it". I was wrong.
bwahahaha, Kaylee's dress in Shindig is HORRIBLE! XD
it's like, too much sweetness XD
ok, lets play the guessing game. I so suck at this but whatever, I might be lucky? XD
Lost - uhm, Boone? (hey did you watch that Joss interview? XD)
SPN - well my first instinct would be Cas of course. if
LotR - bwahaha no fucking idea... wait, did we discuss LotR when we were suppose to sleep? Hmm, damn. Or maybe before. I think we did discuss it once. I'm going to guess for someone really random and say Eowyn (caus eI remember adoring her when reading the books)
Good Omens - urgh... Crowley?
Pushing Daisies - everyone is so awesome! Ned? Nah that is kinda like boring with the main character and everything. Emerson? XD
Rocky Horror - Frank? Becaus eI mean, who can say no to fishnets?
Star Wars - noooooo idea, Yoda? xD
Rent - mr Roger Bon Jovi? *laugh*
bwahhaa, quote Rent in fic! I dare ya!

Date: 2009-08-03 08:01 am (UTC)Ha, yesterday I watched another four and I kinda did warm up to poor Jayne, especially when I found out he was a folk hero XDDDD but I think I'm so leaning with Mal. After that ep. where he 'marries' and Objects In Space I think I swayed for good.
NOOO, IT'S ADORABLE! IT WAS SO PINK AND FUZZY!! If it ever managed to suit me I'd totally wear that XDDD
Lost: YEP, but that one wasn't even a question I think. ;) (YEESSSS.)
SPN: it's Cas! And... ha. Nope, not Bobby. I answered her up there and it was John + Ash + Cas and Dean for a back-up. ;) ;)
LOTR: you're near! Eowyn was my second favorite but my favorite is Faramir. When there's someone with siblings issues always go for that one. ;)
Good Omens: indeed! Well, fine, I change idea whenever I read it because them I'm like 'OMG AZIRAPHALEEE ♥' but while I love them pretty much equally in the end I always lean with Crowley.
PD: hey, I like Ned! He ain't boring! Though no, my favorite is Emerson so good guess. ;) He's just too awesome. And he knits!
RH: yep, Frank. Because HE CROSSDRESSES AND SINGS SWEET TRANSVESTITE.
Star Wars: nope. Han Solo. ;) ;) I has a Harrison Ford crush.
Rent: lol, if you didn't get that one I'd be disowning you or something. ;) ;)
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 10:12 am (UTC)well of course Ned ain't boring! I meant mor elike having the main character as favourite is usually a bit boring and too obvious you know?
You could've changed your mind for Rent XD
wait, you've watched uhm, nine eps and you've watched Objects in Space?
that's the last one!
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 10:30 am (UTC)Ha, well, forgiven about Ash, I know you love him too. ;)
And ha, nope, I didn't change my mind. If only, I just like him better XD

Date: 2009-08-03 10:43 am (UTC)and they have such continuity! What did Kaylee say in Serenity hmmm? something about if the compression coil busts... Mal Mal, should've listened
oh wait wait, which order are you watching the eps in?
please say you haven't been fooled into watching it in the order of airing on Fox ;;
if you're watching 11... that's Trash right? And you've just seen War Stories? Bwahahaha hat! I knitted a hat like that.

Date: 2009-08-04 09:32 am (UTC)Which het relationships in Lost do you like? I really haven't liked anyone much, but then I'm so wired into the slash it's hard to even spot the good het ones, although I am fond of Sun/Jin, and Rose/Bernard are wonderful!
But Zoe/Wash are made of awesome, and really, there isn't a bad character in Firefly (although if I have to dislike anything it's the obvious whore with a heart vs the 'captain/hero' who wants her to give it up with Inara and Mal that annoys me!)
no subject
Date: 2009-08-04 05:52 pm (UTC)That episode was SO GOOD! ♥
I don't like the whole Mal/Inara UST either. I mean, I like the relationship but not when one sees that there's some romantic stuff going on behind it, even if I love both the characters on their own.
no subject
Date: 2009-08-02 10:37 pm (UTC)Anyway. FIREFLY ♥ I love love love love every character on the show as well! My favorites are River and Wash. And Jayne. You haven't seen Jaynestown yet, have you? I don't remember the episode order, but he's just so great in that one, I didn't necessarily warm up to him originally either (except that I was already a fan of Adam Baldwin).
Oh man, I'm so like :D :D :D whenever I think about Firefly. I thought about watching some last night, but then I knew I'd wanna watch Serenity and then I'd be like ;_____; from the aforementioned "thing I always mention."
I don't think this comment makes much sense, but in conclusion, I love those big damn heroes.
P.s. it's really exciting when you watch it and see all these terms that have been floating around fandom so long that they're not even mentioned in the context of Firefly. When Jayne says "I'll be in my bunk," it was like a fucking A-HA lightbulb going off in my head, lol. And "big damn heroes," and of course "also, I can kill you with my brain."
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 08:11 am (UTC)I'll watch Serenity too when I'm done which I guess will be today or tomorrow, even if I know I'm going to suffer. Ah, idiot self, why do spoil so? And don't worry it did make sense!
en Jayne says "I'll be in my bunk," it was like a fucking A-HA lightbulb going off in my head, lol. And "big damn heroes," and of course "also, I can kill you with my brain."
YES! AND THE SPECIAL HELL for fangirls!!! I hadn't known it was all from FF, it's so AWESOME!!

Date: 2009-08-02 10:56 pm (UTC)And yes to Firefly! All of what you said up there is spot on, though I will say that part of what makes Jayne so great is his snarkiness. "Dear Diary, Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy."
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 08:13 am (UTC)LOL, that's what entertains me about Jayne. Then he's mean to the guy I feel should be my favorite but isn't and I get annoyed at him, but his snark is so good!

Date: 2009-08-03 12:29 am (UTC)I'm new to your flist, so pardon my ignorance... why are you in Italy? I'm so ridiculously jealous! :)

Date: 2009-08-03 01:44 am (UTC)I find myself wondering who's your favorite on Watchmen... they are all so fucked up in a way. Is your favorite the Comedian?
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 08:18 am (UTC)And ha, well, I went in for the Comedian but in the end my favorite was Rorschach. Which is so NOT my usual kind of character either (my patterns considered my favorite should have been Daniel actually), but I went in being like, YAY COMEDIAN! and I went out 'OMG ROOORRRSCHAAACH ;____________;' and well, I just picked the more fucked up of the bunch I guess. Or close to it.
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 02:02 am (UTC)4. Jason.
5. David
6. Omar
7. Wild guess - Boromir?
11. Ned
14. Han
15. I didn't know you were into Rent. That is one of my favourite shows. Hmmmm...I will go with Roger because you like musicians or maybe Angel?
I thought Firefly was good, but there was not enough of it for me to really get obsessed with. Kaylee was my favourite. I also liked River, Mal and Wash. I am not a fan of the actress who played Zoe, so even though I recognize her as being really cool, her awful role on Angel ruined her for me. I agree with you about Jayne, though I very much like the variation on the character played by Adam Baldwin on Chuck.
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 08:23 am (UTC)About the rest... Jason is totally correct, David is INDEED correct even if I was in for Nate first (then totally switched), Omar is correct, Boromir is close but nope, it's Faramir because apparently my patterns say I like people with sibling issues, PD is right with Ned being on par with Emerson (I change idea every five minutes), Han is totally correct and YES, you got my two favorites! My actual favorite is Roger though, I have a thing for musicians with issues and baggage, but Angel is easily my second. I got into it kind of in the last two weeks because my friend who was over here loves it and she was like, 'you have to hear it' and I did and it's all I've been listening for the last ten days. I seriously love it.
Firefly is good! I doubt I'll get obsessed also because it's so short, but I like it a lot. I don't know why I never really warmed up to either Buffy or Angel but I kind of am for this one. Kaylee is great! I think that after another four eps yesterday I decided my favorite is Mal but I pretty much liked everyone. And uh, he's on Chuck? Interesting! I will check that out too, sometime..

Date: 2009-08-03 02:48 am (UTC)I love Mal madly. He's SUCH a fantastic character and Nathan Fillion plays him brilliantly.
Zoe is my favorite female TV character ever and Zoe/Wash is my favorite canon ship. I have a big crush on Zoe. I think she is about the epitome of sexy, when it comes to women.
I've read some Firefly slash, but basically I ship canon for that show, so I never got too heavily into it.
My favorite Firefly fic is actually a Firefly/SPN x-over 'verse by
no subject
Date: 2009-08-03 10:02 am (UTC)And after some five more eps I think I swayed towards Mal too. He's seriously fantastic, I ♥ him to such pieces!
I can totally see why Zoe would be your favorite female ever. She's totally the epitome of cool and I do indeed agree about her being really sexy. And wow, strong female character, I'm not used to that!
Oh, AWESOME!! Mal/Dean? *drools at the thought* But I've seen that it's set post movie so I'll bookmark it and save it for after I watch that. Usually I'd have not cared but since it's the first time in ages I watch a show unspoiled for once I'll wait. *bookmarks* Thanks for the rec!

Allora... Obi Wan-Kenobi?
C'ho provato ;) Però bellino, faccio anch'io!

Date: 2009-08-03 10:05 am (UTC)2: ECCOME! ;)

Date: 2009-08-04 06:51 pm (UTC)For the meme:
Lost = Boone
SPN = John, Dean and... Cas?
FNL = Jason. Or Tim. *debates*
SFU = ...David?
Watchmen = Rorschach? Shit, I can't remember.
LOL, except for Lost and 2/3 of SPN, I think I failed at those guesses. =P

Date: 2009-08-04 06:56 pm (UTC)I think I decided that my favorite is Mal but I might change idea, they're all so great. Kaylee is just adorable! And I love Simon too, he should be my favorite seeing my patterns but for once I'm going with the dark main character :P
I think I did warm up to Jayne in the end. He is the kind of lovable jerk indeed, lol. And yeah, I'm watching the movie when I'm done with the series, which will probably be before the end of the week.

Date: 2009-08-04 10:59 pm (UTC)Kaylee is definitely the cutest. My favourite thing about Joss Whedon is that, like you said, he does create very well-written, well-rounded female characters. I love that Kaylee is the ship's mechanic, but she's not a hard-ass, she's still stereotypically girly, wanting that frilly dress. And that River seems like a poor damsel in distress until you realize she's brilliant and can also kick EVERYONE'S ass without blinking. ♥ Simon is so pretty and sweet as well, but I do find Mal edging him out as a favourite a lot for me too. Mal has that great sense of humor along with his angsty past, and I like his sense of fairness. He's a great captain because he's everyone's friend but he also has their respect. I'd gladly follow Capt. Tightpants anywhere.
You watched Firefly in the same order me -- I watched the series first and then the movie at the end. My friend watched the movie first and the series afterwards, which she said helped her understand everything a little better. I don't know which would've worked better, cause the movie does a pretty good job of not feeling out of place with the series but also not needing prior knowledge of the series. I think it's pretty stellar.

Date: 2009-08-04 10:44 pm (UTC)And ha, Watchmen = me not being original. I was all 'OMG COMEDIAN YES JDM' when I went to see the movie, got out like 'RORSCHAAAAAACH ;___;' and then I ship him and Dan so they're my two faves now. I like Rory better, but he's a complete break from my standards. But he's so interesting. *loves*

7. Eowyn, or Faramir
11. Ned
12. Riftraft (I dunno)
13. Again, no clue ... Rorschach?
14. I don't even know, but I hope it's Han Solo, because he clearly > everyone else.
15. Gaaah, I can't remember anyone's names ... the sassy performing artist? Roger?

ROGER! When in doubt, always say the musician.
